Whether we realize it or not, we are all being shaped.  By what we hear. By what we see. By what we consume every single day. Ideas don’t just pass through our minds. They settle in.
They take root. And over time, they begin to shape how we think, how we feel, and how we live.

And that raises a question we don’t ask nearly enough: Who—or what—is shaping your thinking?

You see, your mind is not neutral. It’s easy to think of our minds as passive. Like we’re just observing life as it happens around us. But Scripture tells us something very different.

Romans 12:2 says,
“Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind…”

That word conformed means to be shaped from the outside. In other words—if you’re not intentional…Something else will shape you.

This isn’t just a concept to me. It’s something I’ve watched unfold right in front of me. As a grandparent, I’ve seen how quickly a young mind can be influenced. Not always through one big moment, but through a steady stream of small ones. Things they hear. Things they watch. Conversations they’re around. Ideas that slowly start to sound normal. And before long, you begin to notice something shifting. The way they think. The way they respond. The way they see right and wrong.

And it hits you: This didn’t happen overnight. It was shaped.

And the truth is—that doesn’t just happen with kids. It happens to all of us.

We live in a world full of constant voices. Social media. News. Entertainment. Podcasts. Conversations. Cultural trends. And every one of them is saying something.

Telling you:

  • What matters
  • What is right
  • What success looks like
  • What truth is

And here’s the reality: What you are consistently exposed to… will shape you. Even outside of Scripture, research consistently supports this. Organizations like the Pew Research Center have shown that media consumption plays a significant role in shaping beliefs, values, and worldview—often more than people realize.

Which means this isn’t just spiritual truth. It’s observable reality.

What you fill your mind with matters!

Proverbs 23:7 says,
“For as he thinks in his heart, so is he.”

Your thoughts shape your life.

That’s why Philippians 4:8 gives us a filter:

“Whatever things are true… noble… just… pure… meditate on these things.”

Not everything deserves your attention. Not everything deserves space in your mind. Because what you dwell on…You eventually become influenced by.

The danger isn’t always rebellion—it’s drift

Most people don’t wake up one day and decide to think differently. It happens gradually. A little influence here. A little compromise there. A little less time in truth. And before long… something has shifted.

Hebrews 2:1 warns us,
“lest we drift away.”

Drifting doesn’t require effort. It happens when you stop paying attention and truth has to be intentional. You need to guard what you let in.

Jesus said in Luke 11:34,
“Take heed that the light which is in you is not darkness.”

That’s a warning. Because what you allow in… doesn’t stay neutral.

Ask yourself honestly: What am I watching? What am I listening to? What am I reading?
What am I exposing myself to over and over again? Because over time…Those things are shaping you.

The people around you matter also. It’s not just what you consume. It’s who you listen to.

Proverbs 13:20 says,
“He who walks with wise men will be wise…”

The voices closest to you matter. They influence your thinking. They shape your perspective.
They affect your direction. That’s why church matters. That’s why godly relationships matter. You need voices in your life that consistently point you toward truth.

We tend to focus on actions. But Scripture tells us to pay attention to something deeper.

2 Corinthians 10:5 says,
“bringing every thought into captivity to the obedience of Christ…”

That means: Not every thought is worth keeping. Not every thought is true. Not every thought deserves your attention. Some thoughts need to be challenged. Some need to be replaced. And some need to be surrendered.

Here’s the hope in all of this: No matter how your thinking has been shaped…It can be changed.

Romans 12:2 reminds us that transformation comes through the renewing of the mind.

God doesn’t just change behavior. He changes how we think. And when your thinking changes…Your life follows.

So let me ask you again: Who is shaping your thinking?

Is it culture? Is it media? Is it pressure from the world around you ?

Or…Is it God’s Word? Because something is shaping you. Every day. Every moment.

And if you want to live a life that honors Christ…You have to be intentional about what shapes your mind.

Fill it with truth. Guard it carefully. Renew it daily. Because when your thinking is shaped by God…Your life will be too.
